"Tag manager is easy, though I’m still a bit unsure long term"
I moved a bunch of my tags over to matomo Tag Manager, and it’s been painless so far. Setting up triggers was straightforward enough, and the preview mode helped me catch a couple of things before they went live. I also really like not having to mess with the site code every time I need to change something. It does what I need right now, though I’m still kind of watching to see how solid it feels over time

"Decent integrations, but kind of a hassle"
It does connect with the tools I needed, so that part is decent. But getting everything set up took longer than I expected, and a few of the integrations felt clunky. It works, but it was more annoying than it should’ve been.

"Reports are decent, just wish they had a bit more depth"
The reports are useful overall, and they usually give me what I need at a quick glance. Sometimes they feel a little too surface-level when I’m trying to dig into more detail—though to be fair, they’re still helpful for everyday use.

"Setting up custom dashboards was a bigger..."
Setting up custom dashboards was a bigger headache than I thought it will be. Moving widgets around feels clunky, my saved views didn't really stuck the way I wanted, and sharing the setup with my team was kind of confusing. I ended up spend too much time messing with the dashboard instead of actually looking at the data.

"Easy setup, but did anyone else hit this database snag?"
I got Matomo installed on my server quickly overall. The instructions were clear enough, and I didn’t have to spend too much time messing with things. The only hiccup was with the database settings, but after a quick check I was able to fix it. Smooth setup in the end, just not completely seamless for me. Did anyone else run into the same database settings issue?

"I’m usually trying to check things quickly, and..."
I’m usually trying to check things quickly, and the dashboard will just freeze on me. The tracking also randomly stops often, which is really frustrating when I’m already in a rush and just need it to work

"Support was slow"
I reached out for help and the replies just took way too long. Lots of waiting around. Not ideal when you're trying to get something sorted.

"Privacy sounds nice... but ownership is still blurry"
I like the idea of the privacy features, and it sounds good in theory! But i’m still not totally sure who actually controls my data?? It left me a bit confused.

"Really easy to find what I need"
I’ve been using the dashboard for a bit, and it makes everything super easy to find. It’s straightforward, clear, and saves me time whenever I need to get to something quickly.

"Got lost trying to follow the setup docs"
I tried setting up Matomo one afternoon thinking it would be straightforward, but the docs made it way harder than I expected. I kept landing on pages that felt a bit outdated, then I’d realize a step was missing and end up clicking through to another article that explained things differently. After a while it felt like I was piecing together clues instead of following a setup guide. I’m sure it makes more sense if you already know your way around Matomo, but as a first-time user I was just confused. After wasting too much time on it, I ended up giving up...

"Switched over from Google Analytics, mostly fine"
I moved over from Google Analytics and overall it’s been okay. The setup threw me off a bit at first, mostly because a few little steps weren’t as obvious as I expected, like where certain tracking settings were tucked away and the wording on one or two buttons. Once I slowed down and went through it carefully, it made more sense, but it definitely wasn’t totally smooth right out of the gate.

"Solid for privacy, but a bit tricky to get going"
I went with matomo mainly because I wanted better control over our data and to stay on the safer side with GDPR. On that front, it does feel reassuring, and it definitely helps cut down on some of the cookie consent hassle. That said, getting it set up took longer than I expected, and I found parts of the documentation a little unclear. Once it’s up and running, it does the job well, but I wouldn’t call it especially beginner-friendly. Overall, decent tool with some real benefits, but not the easiest experience. 3 stars from me.

"Decent choice if you really want to self-host"
I went with Matomo mainly because I wanted to keep the data on my own server, and in that sense it does what I needed. I’ll admit, the setup took a little longer than I was hoping for. It wasn’t impossible or anything, just not exactly quick and effortless. Once I got it running, it worked well. Some of the settings still feel a bit confusing, so I can’t say I love everything about it, but overall it’s a solid option if self-hosting is important to you.

"Decent ecommerce tracking, but a bit fiddly"
I used Matomo for ecommerce tracking on a small online shop, and it handled the basics well. Orders, product views, and revenue tracking were all there, and I did like having the data on our own side instead of handing everything off somewhere else.

That said, the setup wasn’t exactly friendly. A few events didn’t show up right away, and I spent more time in the docs than I expected. It kind of felt like Matomo assumes you should already know what went wrong, which was a little frustrating.

Overall, it works and I’m not unhappy with it, but you need some patience. If you like having control, it’s a solid choice. If you’re hoping for something quick and plug-and-play, this might test you a bit.
